Touchstone is a unique three-seasons craft school located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands, only 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1972 as Pioneer Crafts Council, Touchstone's original mission was to foster interest in the preservation of traditional mountain crafts. Today, this unique craft school has expanded to include contemporary and experimental techniques in addition to traditional and historic methods in disciplines such as blacksmithing, ceramics, metals, textiles, glass, oil and watercolor painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.  As Pennsylvania's only residential craft school, Touchstone offers both beginners and seasoned artists more than one hundred week-long and weekend courses taught by some of North America's finest artists and artisans.

ONLY A FEW SPOTS LEFT! Coming in March 2018 –

Pre-Conference Wood-Salt Firing

with Kevin Crowe and Jack Troy

Friday-Sunday, March 9-11
Saturday, March 17

Instructors: Kevin Crowe and Jack Troy

- Master Class -

Friday we will surface the stoneware and porcelain clays with glazes and washes, load both chambers, kindle the kiln overnight, and fire off late Sunday, concluding the 24-30 hour firing. This will be an excellent opportunity to experience firing in a responsive, manageable kiln that has produced thousands of fine pieces in its many years of operation. Kevin and Jack enjoy working together and sharing their experiences with stokers from near and far.

Each person can have about 2 cubic feet of space, about 18" x 18" x 18". or 15-20 average size pieces. Our motto is “Tall and thin always gets in; bowl and plate wait and wait.” We ask that no pieces be wider than 8”and any 8" wide plates must stack, wadded, one on the other in groups of 3 or 4.

We would like discovery to be central to this event, and request that no “production pots” be brought, so we can benefit from a gathering that features “new moves;” perhaps a next generation of familiar forms rather than duplicating or perfecting ones we already know how to make.

A variety of slips and glazes will be prepared, and the formulas will be available to participants. Kevin and Jack will discuss surface considerations at our first gathering.

The Touchstone kiln originally was salted only in the second chamber, and will be salted there during our firing, but because shelves and posts have been used in both chambers, all pieces may may show some effects of salt firing. You may bring any stoneware or porcelain clay rated for c/10.

Tuition includes meals starting lunch on Friday through dinner on Sunday. Private dorm rooms Friday and Saturday night.

We will unload the firing on Saturday, March 17th at approximately 2:30-3:00, time to be determined when the firing ends.
