Alternative Methods of Drawing
Ryder Richards / All Levels / $425 / Weeklong Workshop / (CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP TODAY!)
This course is an exploration in drawing on cut, folded, cast or constructed paper forms. Utilizing minimal tools and lightweight construction techniques, the course will center on creating dynamic drawings that can be altered into three-dimensional forms that can act as either maquette (preliminary) or finished works. The course will include a myriad of ways to treat the surface including painting, glazing, drawing, masking and burning. The optional method of gunpowder drawing will also be displayed.
Ryder Richards grew up in Roswell, New Mexico, and currently lives in Dallas, Texas. He is the gallery director for Richland College, Dallas. As part of his artist practice he writes art reviews and curates exhibits while maintaining a prolific rate of art creation. Participating in nationwide collectives and being the recipient of several artist-in-residence opportunities has allowed Ryder the unique chance to travel and explore alternative ways to create art without access to complex tools. Currently using gunpowder and wood as his primary mediums, Ryder’s work explores patterning and power dynamics in our culture. He is also adept in digital design, figurative rendering and carpentry.

Oil Painting, Plein-air and Studio
Bill Pfahl / All Levels / $425 / Weeklong Workshop / (CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP TODAY!)
Class will begin by concentrating on composition using direct observation. We will use viewfinders and an 8”x10” plastic “picture plane” with grid, as introduced by Betty Edwards in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Several exercises including contour/value studies of the hand, sighting a corner of the room, blind contouring and gesture drawings will be explored first with graphite. Earth or neutral tone value studies in oil, i.e. “rub-outs” will be explored on larger paper substrates primed with shellac in the studio from drawings (charcoal, pastel and oil sketches in the field). Finally direct full color painting in the field will be practiced by each student. Color mixing, cool and warm color temperature awareness and value awareness will be an ongoing point of practice. I will demonstrate a live portrait with oil on paper using this same technique. Our painting experience will be enhanced by using the beautiful Touchstone campus, the studio and field trips to the surrounding Ohiopyle State Park, Shepherd’s farm, the winery and other sites. If it rains, and at night, we will be in the studio creating still life and working on sketches from the field in oil, charcoal and pastel. My work (portrait, landscape, figure) can be viewed on www.bluecanvas.com/wpfahl
