A Basket a Day

Yes! The title of this course really means what it says. Participants will have three new baskets to take home at the end of the weekend. We'll make a berry basket (works great as a catch-all on desk, dresser, or counter), a market basket (useful for gathering items at market, carrying produce from the garden, or tidying up at home), and a serving basket (with a wooden base). Beginners will learn basic weaving techniques and simple accent coloring, while experienced weavers will be able to incorporate more complex weave structures and color patterns into their work.

Quilt As You Go

Ladies and gentlemen, sewers all. Come and have some fun. The pleasure of Quilt-As-You-Go is portable quilting. Blocks are made as individual quilts and joined to make any size piece desired. We will explore straight, curved, and mixed directional strip piecing, appliqué and crazy blocks. Color choices are important so bring your favorite fabrics and include some unexpected. This is an intense week of sewing. While you should be able to complete a twin size quilt in the week and will learn some new tricks, be prepared to enjoy yourself and delight in the results. All levels of experience welcome!

Silk Painting & Shibori

This workshop will give you a great foundation to begin your new obsession creating wearable art. Focusing on process we will experiment with color, play with pattern and be seduced by the flow of paint and dye on silk. Half the week will be spent exploring Chinese silk painting techniques and the other half exploring Shibori, the ancient Japanese fiber art of bound resist dyeing. Participants will leave this experience thrilled with the exquisite wearable artworks they create.
Minimum age requirement: 12 with parent/guardian in class, 13 without parent/guardian

Fibers, Fibers Everywhere

Learn how to paint on fiber and create handcrafted felted books and slippers. Make fiber collages using wool that you have dyed yourself. We’ll explore Japanese shibori methods and do some nuno felting too. Each day of this week will feature a new fiber technique for you to explore. For this journey into fibers, students are encourages to bring to class photos, poems, or written work from their travels for inspiration. At the end of the week, you will leave with multiple, colorful and uniquely evocative pieces of artwork.

Basketry: Kick It Up With Color

It’s true….. Making baskets is fun. But adding colored materials to the process elevates it to playtime! Participants will incorporate color into their baskets in ways appropriate for their skills levels. Beginners will work with color stripes, create a simple checkerboard, add surface decorations, and weave basic balanced twill as they learn fundamental weaving techniques. Experienced weavers can select or design baskets that include plaids, complex twills, and medallions in multiple colors. Come and join us for a week of great adult playtime!

Lace Knitting

Make holes in your knitting...on purpose! This class is for knitters who are curious about lace and want to learn in a guided way. Beginning students will learn the fundamentals of lace stitches and how to read visual knitting instructions. More advanced students can perfect their technique, make their own charts, and even design their own lace product. Everyone will leave with several small completed projects and get started on a larger project of their own choice.

Shibori Obsession

Immerse yourself in Shibori, the ancient Japanese fiber art of bound resist dyeing using techniques of stiching, binding, folding, clamping, and wrapping. This in depth weekend workshop will explore a variety of patterning, dyeing, and discharging methods with fiber reactive and acid dyes to create several one of a kind wearable works of art. Some Previous Shibori Experience preferred.

Needle Felted Mandalas

The Mandala is an ancient art form, a sacred circle and symbol of healing and wholeness that has been used in spiritual traditions around the world, and more recently also as a tool of self-discovery and centering.  Mandalas are highly decorative and can be used as a focal point in meditation.  Each mandala has a uniquely transformative energy which lives on in the person who creates it or those who have experienced it.

Experience how spirit and art can be combined to create something truly special:  Students will learn a variety of techniques in needle felting (a form of “dry felting”) using yarn and unspun wool fibers, and a special felting needle; learn about the symbolism and healing effect of the mandala; have a quiet time for reflection; then create their very own needle felted mandala wall hanging.
