About the exhibition, Veteran Obsolete, in the artist’s own words:
Geoffrey Bowton, a three-year resident artist and military veteran based in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina at Penland School of Craft, will be showcasing his work “Veteran Obsolete” spring 2025, an upcoming art exhibition at Touchstone Center for Crafts in Farmington, PA. The narrative behind his work focuses on the aftermath of combat deployments and the mental health challenges faced by veterans, it is both timely and poignant. By using military gear as symbolic elements to depict the life of a veteran post-service, the artist provides a window into the struggles that many veterans endure, such as depression, suicide, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the lasting effects of traumatic events.
Through exploring these themes, “Veteran Obsolete” offers a space for reflection, empathy, and understanding of the realities faced by those who have served in the military. This work serves as a platform for dialogue and contemplation on the physical, emotional, and psychological toll of military service, shedding light on important issues that are often overlooked or stigmatized. The exploration of memory, discovery, and the effects of combat experiences adds layers of depth and meaning to the work, inviting viewers to engage with the stories and emotions conveyed through the artist’s life experiences. It is crucial for people to visit the gallery and experience the exhibition for several reasons:
