Surround yourself in art and nature as we take a closer look at the common things all around us – leaves, branches, tree bark, fungi – whatever inspires you! Botanical illustration differs from all other forms of illustration in that it involves very close observation and scientifically accurate drawing to capture the habits, details, and color of a plant. We will work in graphite and colored pencil on paper in a step-by-step, guided approach, beginning with the basics of form and tone and moving onto color.
*This workshop will provide ample one-on-one instruction, enabling participants with no experience to those who are experienced to develop their own unique style and skills at their own pace.
**Materials and studio fees are charged to students based on studio usage and materials Touchstone is providing at the request of the instructor. Additionally, some instructors may also require that you bring certain materials and tools with you, in which case a list will be provided. Final cost of these fees will be posted at least two weeks ahead of the workshop to be paid in full prior to check-in.

WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS should bring the following materials for the workshop

Touchstone will let you know if a workshop is running no later than 2 weeks before the start of the class. Regardless of the outcome of the class, running or not, Touchstone is not responsible for the reimbursement of any materials bought for a workshop.
- One graphite pencil HB (any brand)
- Kneaded eraser
- Small sketchbook or journal for quick studies and notetaking
- Drawing, Masonite, Plexiglass or Office Clip Board (to provide a smooth work surface) at least 9”x12” or larger
- Hand-held magnifying glass
- Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils: The colors below are the anticipated colors that we will use (think leaf & branch/bark nature-related colors). All can be purchased open stock from Amazon (amazon.com), Blick (store or dickblick.com), Jerry’s Artarama (jerrysartarama.com), Artists & Craftsman Supply, Hobby Lobby and Michaels – often on sale. If you have a Prismacolor set that has comparable colors, feel free to bring. Prismacolor brand pencils are wax-based and are used in this class as they allow for great blending and shading effects. Other brands may not achieve the same results.
