At its essence, Tyler’s work is about showing the unconventional beauty of ordinary life, usually due to dramatic light and shadow. He works in a methodology known as “Plein Air,” which he defines as, all painting or sketching that uses the natural world as a reference. Working this way, rather than relying on a photograph, gives the work an indistinguishable sense of truth and offers a far more gratifying process. Even when Tyler is not fully satisfied with what he has painted, he is always fulfilled by the experience. Despite also passionately working as an art educator and being active socially, there are times when he feels like he’s playing a role, being congenial, gracious, mannerly, and stable. It’s when he’s out in the world with his paints and easel, the real Tyler emerges. The happiest times of his life have been when he’s alone painting, watching his hand do amazing things. It’s at these moments when his mind blends with the natural world and he feels the most complete.
