No Experience/Beginner TBD Materials and Studio Fees*

Discover a calming, nature-inspired approach to watercolor. We’ll begin with simple warm-ups and sketchbook exploration to observe how water, pigment, and paper interact. Techniques will encourage you to release control, follow the flow, and welcome moments of unpredictability. You’ll build confidence by embracing experimentation and gentle imperfection, allowing watercolor to become a quiet, meditative practice.

Assisted by artist and educator Leah Shuck, who will lead participants in mindful movement using breathwork and gentle stretching, either standing or in a chair. These exercises offer a way to ground the body and mind in the present moment before artmaking together. Act 48 credit is available for Pennsylvania educators.

*Materials and studio fees are charged to students based on studio usage and materials Touchstone is providing at the request of the instructor. Additionally, some instructors may also require that you bring certain materials and tools with you, in which case a list will be provided. Final cost of these fees will be posted at least two weeks ahead of the workshop to be paid in full prior to check-in.

WORKSHOP STUDENTS should bring the following materials for the workshop

*It is recommended that you wait to hear if the workshop is running before you purchase materials. Touchstone will let you know if a workshop is running no later than 2 weeks before the start of the class. Regardless of the outcome of the class, running or not, Touchstone is not responsible for the reimbursement of any materials bought for a workshop.

The most important thing to bring is your curiosity. If you already own watercolor supplies, please bring and use them. There’s no need to purchase expensive materials for this workshop.

We’ll be working with a limited palette throughout the weekend, discovering how a handful of colors can create a surprising range of beautiful mixtures. Rather than collecting more supplies, we’ll focus on seeing more, mixing more, and enjoying the process.

If you do need to purchase supplies, the following are simple recommendations.

Watercolor Paints: Tube paints are my personal preference, but half-pan sets work perfectly well. Since we’ll be working with a limited palette, a simple beginner set is all you need. Look for a set with a yellow, red, and blue. Additional colors such as warm and cool primaries, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and Sap Green are welcome but not necessary. Watercolor Brushes: Soft natural or synthetic watercolor brushes. Suggested sizes are round #4, #8, and #12. An optional large flat wash brush is also useful. Amazon link

Watercolor Sketchbook or Pad: (140 lb. cold press recommended). Touchstone will provide additional watercolor paper in larger sheets throughout the workshop. Amazon link

Palette: Any palette with mixing space is fine. A white ceramic plate, inexpensive plastic palette, or even a disposable paper plate works well.

Soft Rags and Water Containers: Two empty containers for clean water.

Notebook, Pencil and Eraser

Optional Materials: Hair dryer (if you have one—we’ll have a few available to share), empty spray bottle, apron, or any other materials you’d like to experiment with, such as toothbrushes, sponges, inexpensive makeup brushes, feathers, or other found materials.

Reusable water bottle

NOTES:
Touchstone and your instructor will provide masking tape, paper towels, extra paints, brushes, palettes,
drawing boards, and larger watercolor paper if you need them or would like to experiment with different
materials.
