Unlock New Techniques in ‘Imagery on Stained Glass’ with Joseph Cavalieri

This June, Touchstone Center for Crafts welcomes a fresh opportunity for artists of all levels to learn and practice detailed imagery techniques on stained glass. Led by renowned New York-based artist and instructor Joseph Cavalieri, Imagery on Stained Glass runs June 16–20 at Touchstone’s scenic Pennsylvania campus.
Cavalieri, who has taught more than 100 workshops worldwide, brings a wide range of creative techniques to participants, making this a unique and enriching experience. “I’m happy to share my techniques and knowledge with a new group,” he said, noting that Touchstone’s beautiful, healthy setting makes it an ideal place for learning.
After attending a workshop with Joseph Cavalieri, one participant said: “If anyone has the opportunity to take Joseph’s session to learn painting techniques on glass, you will not be disappointed. Well worth it. I’ve been doing stained glass/fused glass for 40+ years. It was the best. Got my creative side stirred up to a new level.”
The five-day workshop focuses on accessible methods for creating vivid imagery on stained glass. Participants will learn how to cut glass, airbrush using an atomizer and airbrush tool, draw with pen and ink, silk screen print, and paint with enamels. Each piece is kiln-fired and finished with copper foil and soldering to complete a stained glass panel up to 12×12 inches. Importantly, no expert painting skills are necessary—tracing images, using patterned stencils, and working with pre-existing screens offer plenty of creative paths.

For those hesitant about their drawing abilities, Cavalieri offers encouragement. Many participants start out worried they “can’t draw,” but the workshop removes that barrier by emphasizing approachable, layered techniques
What sets Cavalieri’s workshops apart is his personalized approach. He works individually with each participant, offering advice tailored to their ideas and guiding them through to a completed piece. Past participants have praised his instruction for expanding their skills and inspiring their creativity. One previous participant said the workshop was “a complete game changer” for their work, while another highlighted learning techniques that layered color and texture in ways they had never explored before.

Beyond technical skills, Cavalieri incorporates insights into marketing and artistic opportunities, helping participants grow both creatively and professionally.
Whether new to stained glass or ready to enhance existing skills, participants in Imagery on Stained Glass will find a supportive, engaging environment where creativity thrives. As one former participant put it: “Never too old to learn”—this workshop offers a chance to see stained glass in a whole new light.
