Phil will be teaching ‘Face to Face’ at Touchstone from September 14–16, 2018. In this workshop, students will examine the history of portraiture, from the old masters to contemporary artists, and the various techniques they used to create a successful work of art. We will study how composition, lighting, and expression all play key roles in developing a powerful image. Each day, we will research artists whose work relies heavily on these techniques, and then work from models or busts and create a portrait that is based on the topics covered that day. On the final day, we will take all of these techniques that were covered and create a self-portrait. This class is geared towards students who have some fundamental drawing knowledge and want to expand their skill set.
